Each year, state governments in Australia kill thousands of sharks and other marine animals in the name of beach goer safety. The problem? This doesn’t actually keep anyone safe and also decimates our oceans.
We helped form a coalition of over 50 organisations and ambassadors to send a clear message, the community wants Nets Out Now.
PROJECT GOALS
We demand decision-makers at all levels stop killing sharks and other marine life, and to modernise shark bite mitigation in Australia. We specifically call for:
The NSW and QLD Governments need to immediately remove shark nets and catch-and-kill drumlines from their waters, and move to deploy modern non-lethal technologies.
The Australian Government needs to immediately close the 43B loophole in the EPBC Act that allows the culling of protected species at the hands of QLD and NSW Governments, without any formal approvals.
KEY ACTIVITIES
Research and data collection: Compile scientific evidence, legal precedents, and case studies to support the project's claims about the ineffectiveness and harm caused by shark nets and lethal drumlines.
Public awareness campaigns: Develop and implement targeted communication strategies to inform the public about the issue and engage them in the campaign.
Policy advocacy: Lobby government officials at both state and federal levels to advocate for legislative changes and increased funding for non-lethal shark mitigation.
Coalition building: Foster partnerships with like-minded organizations and individuals to amplify the project's impact.
Legal challenges: Explore legal avenues to challenge the use of shark nets and lethal drumlines, building on existing legal precedents.
Community engagement: Organize community events, workshops, and educational programs to raise awareness and build support for the project.
Monitoring and evaluation: Track project progress, measure outcomes, and adjust strategies as needed.
