CASE STUDY

The Great White Project

The Great White Project is a New Zealand based satellite tagging program, funded entirely by public sponsorship of satellite tags. Envoy Foundation has sponsored the tagging of a 3.2m female great white names Ngaruru, which is a Māori word meaning to thrive and flourish.

PROJECT GOALS

Initiated in 2022 after a cluster of juvenile Great Whites started inhabiting Tauranga Harbour, four Great Whites were tagged and tracked. Effort then moved south to the Titi Island group just north of Stewart Island, where the SW Pacific population aggregate each summer. Between 2024-2026 twenty two great Whites have been tagged and display their tracks, when active, on The Great White App.

KEY ACTIVITIES

The purpose of the Great White Project is to monitor habitat use and migration of a species that has not been tracked in New Zealand waters since 2015. Linkages with Australia and Polynesia are evident and tissue samples gathered while tagging are being used to assist with Australaisian population estimates for this protected and threatened species.
